I send a warm greeting from Germany and I would like to introduce me to the community.
My name is Henrik and I’m the business director of a IT company in Germany. As I’m an absolute beginner in the field of M2M communications, I was very happy to find this forum and use it in order to find some more information and some place for discussions.

Especially I was looking for the Xirgo Xt-2000 device and I also contacted Xirgo directly to learn some more about their products.

In order to begin with I just have the following question.

Is there a possibility to work wiht a Xirgo device in Germany? In Germany we are using the GSM frequenz 900 and 1800. When I look into the tech specifications of the Xirgo devices I only find 850/1900 MhZ.
If Xirgo does not support this, does anybody have an idea which devices can work in Europe over the OBD interface? I already checked the website and the devices from enfora. But as far as I know, they do not support the OBD interface - right?

I would thank all of you for your time and I would appreciate any help in this field.

Warm regards from the cold Germany
Henrik

Welcome to the forums. Did you get a response from Xirgo regarding support for their device in Germany? We’d be interested in hearing more about it.

Dear dbaldwin,

I contacted Numerex and learned that they have a device which is working in Germany/EU.
Mike Oslin was very nice and send me this link:
http://store.numerex.com/devices/mobile-tracking/nm-5500-wired-gps-tracking-device-w-warning-buzzer-and-ignition-kill-option.html

However, I’m not sure at the moment if this device really has a OBD interface to connect to the vehicle. When I study the technical specifications and the manual it does not look like.

I’m searching for a OBD device which work in Europe with a quad band device. I do not want my clients to wire their trackers in the car. I want a plug and play solutions for the OBD interface.

If you know something, please let me know ...

Thank you for your help ..

Best greetings from the cold Germany
Henrik

Henrik,

Here is a plug and play device with limited OBD capabilities:

Have you looked into this one?

dbaldwin,

I found this but is it working in Europe?
In the tec specifications it is said:

Supports 850/1900 MHz

Therefore I’m a bit confused.

In addition:
What do you mean by limited OBD capabilities?

I also reached more about the Xirgo OBD devices in the Internet. It seems to me that this is the only OBD GPS tracking device which is available. I did not found any other company which is producing something like this.

BTW:
Is it true that the maximum frequency of delivering the data to the server is 1 min.?
Is this all enough for our applications?

I would like to have a narrower time frame.

Thanks for all information.

Cold greetings from Germany
Henrik

Henrik,

Yes, Xirgo manufactures units capable of utilizing the 900/1800 bands. I am not sure what kind of lead time or commitment levels will be required but if your interested in pursing this we can have someone from sales contact you.  Please provide your contact info.

To answer your question about event reporting I have listed (below) the parameters for the Xirgo OBD devices.

Periodic Reporting:
o Periodic reporting with ignition ON >= 1 minute increments, 0 = disable, 43200 max
o Periodic reporting with ignition OFF>= 5 minute increments, 0 = disable, 43200 max
o Periodic reporting with power up (heartbeat) >= 1 minute increments, 0=disable
Alert Messages:
o Direction Change threshold exceeded> 5 degree increments, 0=disable, 180 max
o Speed threshold exceeded>= 5 mph increments, 0=disable, 150 max
o RPM threshold exceeded>= 1rpm increments, 0=disable, 20000 max
o Geofence crossing detected (on or off)
o Mileage threshold>=5 mile increments, 0=disable, 65000 max
o Acceleration threshold exceeded is acceleration threshold >= 1mph/sec, 1mph increments, 20 max
o Deceleration threshold exceeded = 1mph/sec, 1mph increments, 0=
o Main Battery voltage below threshold >=6V and <20V volts, 0.1 volt increments, 0=disable
o Ignition ON alert (on or off)
o Ignition OFF alert (on or off)
o Alert upon initial Power Up/Reset and GPS lock (on or off)

Regards,

Jason Gafa

Hello JGafa,

thanks for your post.
Can you tell me what

o Periodic reporting with ignition ON >= 1 minute increments, 0 = disable, 43200 max

exactly means?
I suppose that it means (like mentioned above) that the maximum periodic reporting time is 1 minute, correct? What does 43200 max mean?
Thanks for all information.

By the way:
Is it possible to send an alert when the device is take off of the OBD vehicle port?

Henrik,

Periodic reporting means the device can report a location event (latitude/Longitude) while the ignition is on every 1 minute (or) in increments up to 43200 minutes maximum.

Example : If the device was configured to report on 1 minute increments and you drove the car for 15 minutes to your planned destination, the application would have 15 location reports detailed on the map like a bread crumb trail. If the device was configured to report every 5 minutes you would only have three(3) location reports on the map during a 15 minute drive.

The OBD device can not report a disconnection event because it does not utilize a back-up battery. However, the device does report a “GPS LOCK” when it is initially plugged in.  Users can easily see that a device was tampered with by viewing the GPS lock events.
